John 13:34–35 (NIV)
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Love is one of the most powerful themes in the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture reveals God’s love for humanity and His desire for His people to demonstrate that same love to others. While the world often defines love as a feeling, an emotion, or an attraction, biblical love goes much deeper. It is a deliberate choice, a reflection of God’s character, and a mark of true discipleship.
In John 13:34–35, Jesus gave His followers a clear command:
“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
These words were spoken shortly before His crucifixion. Jesus knew that His disciples would face challenges, opposition, and difficulties after His departure. Therefore, He gave them a command that would unite them and reveal their relationship with Him to the world.
Notice that Jesus did not simply say, “Love one another.” He added a standard: “As I have loved you.” This means believers are called to love others in the same way Christ loves them—with grace, sacrifice, forgiveness, compassion, patience, and humility.
Living out this command is not always easy. Relationships can be complicated. People can disappoint us, misunderstand us, or even hurt us. Yet Christ calls believers to rise above selfishness and reflect God’s love in every interaction.
Loving others as Christ loves us is one of the clearest ways to demonstrate genuine faith. It impacts families, friendships, workplaces, churches, and communities. Through godly love, believers become living examples of Christ’s transforming power.
